The Department of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology (DPBP) started its journey from the former Chittagong Government Veterinary College (CGVC) in 1995. In 2006, the CGVC had upgraded into Chittagong (presently Chattogram) Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU). The Department stands as a cornerstone of the institution, exemplifying a dynamic and multidisciplinary approach to veterinary education, research, and public service. Serving the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM), the Faculty of Food Science and Technology (FFST), and the Faculty of Fisheries (FOF), the department plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic and professional trajectories of students across these faculties.
Academic Contributions
Within the FVM, the DPBP offers a comprehensive curriculum encompassing seven subjects across four major disciplines: Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Toxicology. This structured program initiates in the first year, first semester and extends through to the fourth year, second semester, ensuring a progressive and in-depth understanding of each discipline. The department's commitment is reflected in its substantial allocation of 25 credit hours and 93 contact hours dedicated to these subjects.
In the FFST and FOF, the department extends its expertise by offering courses in Biochemistry . This interdisciplinary approach ensures that students receive a well-rounded education, integrating fundamental biochemical principles with practical applications in food science and fisheries.
Postgraduate Opportunities
Recognizing the importance of advanced education and research, the DPBP offers robust postgraduate programs, including Master of Science (MS) degrees in Physiology, Pharmacology, and Biochemistry. For those pursuing doctoral studies, the department provides Ph.D. programs in Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology. These programs are designed to cultivate research acumen, critical thinking, and specialized expertise, preparing graduates for leadership roles in academia, industry, and beyond.
Pioneering Animal Welfare and Veterinary Ethics
A hallmark of the DPBP is its pioneering efforts in integrating Animal Welfare and Veterinary Ethics into the veterinary curriculum. In 2014, CVASU became the first institution in Bangladesh to introduce a dedicated course titled "Animal Welfare and Veterinary Ethics," underscoring the university's commitment to humane and ethical animal treatment.
Holistic Development and Extracurricular Engagement
Beyond its academic and research pursuits, the DPBP is deeply invested in the holistic development of its students. The department actively encourages participation in extracurricular activities, fostering a vibrant academic community that values leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility. Initiatives such as the Research Journal Club provide platforms for students to engage in scholarly discourse, critically analyze contemporary research, and cultivate a culture of continuous learning and intellectual curiosity.
Commitment to Quality Education and Public Service
At its core, the DPBP is driven by a mission to deliver quality education that is responsive to the evolving needs of society. The department's curricula are meticulously designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding necessary to excel in their professional endeavors. Concurrently, the department is steadfast in its commitment to public service, engaging in outreach programs, community education, and collaborative projects that address pressing issues in animal health, food safety, and public health.
In summary, the Department of Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology at CVASU exemplifies a harmonious blend of academic rigor, research innovation, ethical stewardship, and community engagement. Through its multifaceted contributions, the department not only enriches the academic fabric of the university but also plays a pivotal role in advancing veterinary sciences on both national and global stages.
