The Department of a Pathology and Parasitology has started its journey through the establishment of Chittagong Government Veterinary College (CGVC) in 1996. After the conversion of CGVC into Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) in 2006, it has become an important department under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.  The Department offers different courses at undergraduate (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) and Postgraduate level (MSc and PhD).  Along with teaching activities, faculties of this department also engaged with research, consultancy and disease diagnosis and other extracurricular activities. At present, there are 11 projects running in this department where 7 MSc and 1 PhD students are working. In 2017-2020, faculties of this department published 53 peer-reviewed publication in different illustrious journals of the world.  

Vision and Mission:

  • To promote an understanding of disease processes in animals and birds, their causes, pathogenesis, diagnosis and control through education, research, training and innovation.
  • To develop a center of excellence for diagnosis, education, training and research in the field of Veterinary Pathology and Parasitology.

 Departmental Teaching

This department offers 6 courses in Pathology (13 credits, General Pathology-I, General Pathology-II & Nutritional Pathology, Systemic Pathology, Pathology of Infectious Diseases, Avian Pathology and Clinical Pathology and Necropsy) and 4 courses in Parasitology (10 credits, Platyhelminthes & Malacology, Veterinary Nematology, Veterinary Entomology, Protozoology) for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student of 2nd, 3rd and 4th at undergraduate level. It also provides MSc (1.5 years, thesis based) degree in both Pathology and Parasitology.

There are five laboratories in this department which are as follows:  

  • Pathology Laboratory
  • Histopathology Laboratory
  • Parasitology Laboratory
  • Molecular Biology Laboratory
  • Clinical Pathology Laboratory

Pathology Laboratory:

This laboratory is located at the ground floor of academic building-1(Room no.: X) of CVASU where practical classes of undergraduate and postgraduate are taken place. This laboratory provides   postmortem services as well as it also preserved around 100 specimens in the Pathology Museum. This laboratory possesses different equipment and devices including -20 degree freezer, Multimedia Projector, Overhead Projector, Slide Projector, CCTV camera fitted with microscope, Binoculor and Trinocular microscope etc. 

Histopathology Laboratory:

This laboratory is well equipped and postgraduate students usually work there. It possesses a specialized Digital Automatic Tissue Processor and Microtome machine for histopathological diagnosis of different diseases. It is located at the ground floor of Academic building (Room no.: X).

 Parasitology Laboratory:

This laboratory is located at 1st floor of academic building-1 (Room no.: X) of CVASU where undergraduate and postgraduate practical classes are taken place. This laboratory preserves around 100 parasite specimens for teaching and research purposes. It possesses different equipment and devices including Ultracentrifuge, Refrigerator, Incubator, Overhead Projector, Slide Projector Electronic Balance, Ceiling Mounted Multimedia Projector, Remote controlled Projector screen, Binulnlar & Trinocular microscope and Digital Photography/Videography unit with microscope (Carl zeiss) etc. Besides this, internet facility and arrangement of IPS is also available in this laboratory. 

 Molecular Biology Laboratory: 

This is our newly established and sophisticated laboratory for the accomplishment of research activities. Various equipment and devices like PCR Thermocycler, Clean bench UV transilluminator with camera, Gel electrophoresis unit and consumables, Online UPS available here. It is located at the ground floor of Academic building (Room no.: X).

 Clinical Pathology Laboratory:

This laboratory is located at the ground floor of academic building-1(Room no.: X) of CVASU where practical classes of undergraduate and postgraduate are taken place. This lab is equipped with various equipment and devices such as BSL-2 hood, Automatic blood hematology analyses, Urine Analyzer, Refrigerated centrifuge, Water bath, Distillation plants, portable Autoclave,  .

 Important activities/services: 

Other than teaching and research activities, this department also involved with diversified activities which are listed below:

  • Prescription and postmortem service
  • Examination of specimen (Blood, faces,urine, tissue) for providing diagnostic services
  • Publication of regular Pathobiology eNewsletter
  • Regular celebration of ‘Annual Departmental Day’
  • Collaborative activities with national and international institutes
  • Fund collection from national and international organizations
  • Arrange of regular meeting, seminar, workshop, training etc.
