There are two museums located at CVASU: 1.  Anatomy Museum 2.  Fisheries Museum


 Anatomy Museum 

Introduction:

Chattogram is a wonderful playground of natural beauty in Bangladesh. In the exquisite beauty of vast Bay of Bengal, widespread greenery and high hills of Chattogram, there lies Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Khulshi, the only specialized university of this kind in Bangladesh. In this university, under the Department of Anatomy and Histology, a large, fascinating and the only Anatomy Museum of the country has been established in order to produce world-class graduates.

 The museum is a centre for learning new information or knowledge through visual observation. Anatomy museum explores the knowledge based on the shape and structure of living beings as a whole or part. It has a vast and rare collection of skeletons, stuff, foetus, preserved specimens, models, slides and portraits. CVASU is a specialized university cherish for becoming centre of excellence in the biological arena. Here students are intended to enrich cutting edge knowledge through practical exposure. In this context, our museum is an ideal centre for their up to date learning. Skeleton of domestic animals, wild animals, poultry, model of different animals, stuffed birds, lizard etc., are the basic tools for their comparative learning procedure. This approach of learning is directly related to the implementation of their knowledge and skills.

Opportunities for visitors:

The main attraction of the museum is the skeleton of a huge elephant whose bones were collected from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park, situated at Chakoria under Cox’s Bazar district. The bones of the high camel skeleton were collected from the National Zoo of Bangladesh located in Dhaka. The huge dead python was collected from Sitakunda Eco Park while the giant skeleton of the crocodile was collected from the crocodile reproduction centre at Valuka in Mymensingh. Visitors of all ages can enjoy easily the skeleton of horses, dogs, cats etc. Children can get much pleasure and interest in stuffed birds, lizards etc. People can enrich their biological knowledge from stuff, skeletons, specimens, bones and different models as well as different slides.

 Facilities for researchers and learners

Researchers from different corner especially Anatomist, Embryologist, Ornithologist, Biologist and Environmental scientist have opportunities to improve their knowledge by doing research. The scientist from biophysics can get a deeper insight to find out solutions for locomotive issues. Students of comparative studies, gross anatomy, neuroscience, developmental biology will be able to learn and enrich their knowledge to keep them ahead in competitive learning.

Collection and Resources                                                     

The number of the various types of the skeleton of animals and birds preserved in the museum is around 260 while the number of models is about 120. The museum also has 180 plastinated and cast organs, 300 chemical preserved organs, as well as 160 various stuffed animals and birds. The museum also housed 2000 bones, 3000 slides and 30 portraits of the scientist.

Among the various skeletons of different animals including the human skeleton, the museum contains the skeleton of elephant, camel, crocodile, snake, cow, horse, goat, sheep, deer, monkey, pig, dog, cat, poultry, pigeon, quail, magpie, owl, mynah, sparrow, bat, rabbit, guinea pig, turtle and others. 

Among the stuffed birds and animals the museum has crocodile, goat, dog, cat, monkey, monitor lizard, rooster and hen, goose, pigeon, woodpecker, magpie, owl, kingfisher, quail, rabbit and guinea pig et cetera. The stuffing process involves keeping the appearance of an animal intact using cotton, iron rod and wire after removing and processing the skin of a dead animal with chemicals. 

The museum contains various organs of different domestic and wild animals preserved in glass containers using chemicals. The models of different animals like cow, horse, goat, sheep, pig, dog and cat etc. including human as well as the models of their different organs such as eye, brain, heart, lungs, kidney, womb, udder, DNA and chromosome are kept in this large museum. 

Moreover, the pictures containing the labelled diagrams of different organs and intestines of animals as well as the portraits of scientists who contributed to anatomy are hanging on the wall of the museum.

 

History:

The country's first Anatomy museum was developed through the sub-project "Establishment of Anatomy museum at CVASU, CP-2179" in 2013. This project (total 5 years long, 1st phase from 2013 to 2015 and 2nd phase from 2017 to 2018) was funded by World Bank through the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) of University Grant Commission (UGC), Bangladesh. The museum was established under the supervision of Professor Dr Mohammad Lutfur Rahman and through the relentless hard work of all the teachers, officers, staff members and students of the Department of Anatomy and Histology. Initially, it was set up on a small scale in the department. With the advancement of time, it's getting enrichment of its contents and resources. In December 2016, this museum shifted to the present place; a new building with a spacious and well decorated internal look.

The museum is open to all from 9 am to 5 pm every day except for Friday and Saturday and all other holidays. Visitors can explore the museum without any entry fee.

Fisheries Museum

Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) is a specialized life science university in Bangladesh. This university has three faculties namely the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Food Science and Technology, and Faculty of Fisheries. Among these three faculties, the Faculty of Fisheries (FoF) is the youngest one. Though FoF started its magnificent journey on 1st January 2013, it has already shown bright footstep within a very short time. The fisheries museum is one of the best addition to this faculty. The museum has been developed to acquaint students, researchers as well as general people with the fisheries resources of Bangladesh under a subproject of Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP-3212) under the University Grant Commission (UGC) in collaboration with the World Bank entitled "Capacity building of the newly established Faculty of Fisheries and strengthening the internship program for producing competent graduates”. This museum is serving not only for the students and teachers of the Faculty of Fisheries but also for the scientists and professionals who want to work with the changes and reflections of the fisheries resources of Bangladesh. The major objectives of the museum are to preserve fisheries biodiversity, promote research on the maritime and fishery aspects, and contribute in raising awareness towards sustainability. Despite being one of the youngest members in fisheries education of Bangladesh, the establishment of this unique fisheries museum was possible by funding from the above HEQEP project.

The museum is situated on the ground floor of the Fisheries Faculty building containing a 3100 Square Feet area. The total area is divided into different sub-sections namely Freshwater Corner, Marine Corner, Shell Corner, Aquatic Weed Corner, Aquatic Bird Corner and Video Documentary Presentation. The Freshwater Corner is enriched with about 200 freshwater fish species, model of modern and integrated fish farms, model of different estuary formation, various freshwater staffed fish, skeletons of freshwater fishes, etc. The Marine Corner contains about 225 marine fish species, skeletons of sharks, turtle, staffed rays, shrimps, crabs and lobsters etc. Similarly, the Shell Corner preserve the shells and corals of Bangladesh, and Aquatic Weed Corner contains the preserved samples of different freshwater aquatic weeds and seaweeds. While entering the museum one can easily see the overall model of the museum and a fountain. There is also a large aquarium inside the museum which is enriched with many aquarium fishes and live turtles. In facts, the aquarium is a centre of the model ecosystem of the lentic habitat. Upon the corridor of the museum, there are different types of traditional fishing crafts, fishing knots, traditional fishing gears and fishing traps on the walls which represent our traditional fishing technology.

Species of this museum have been collected from different parts of Bangladesh where marine fish species, shells and seaweeds were collected from the coastal areas of Bangladesh like Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Khulna regions and Saint Martin's island. On the other hand, freshwater species were collected from different districts of Bangladesh such as Mymensingh, Pabna, Khulna, Chandpur, haor areas of Sylhet, Kaptai lake, Halda and Karnaphuli river upon the availability of the species. This museum is the only complete fisheries museum for the collection and preservation of aquatic biodiversity in Bangladesh.
