The Faculty of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) deals with modern science that has facilitated continuous development in the fields of Agriculture, Health, Industry, and Environment through recombination and/or genetic modification of microbes, plants, and animals. Department of Environmental Biotechnology is one of the five departments under this faculty. Environmental biotechnology is a field of technologies that uses biological processes, living systems, or organisms to produce goods and services for the greater interest of the environment. Removal of pollution, Renewable energy production, Biomass production, Genetic rescue, Site remediation, improvement of Soil health, reduction of Greenhouse gas emissions, and so on.

Environmental biotechnology uses different techniques and/or organisms i.e. microorganisms and secondary metabolites such as enzymes to protect, improve, or restore the environment. Environmental biotechnology is an area of active research and development with the potential to contribute to developing sustainable solutions to environmental problems.

Mission

The prevention of environmental pollution caused by industrialization, information & telecommunication technology, and unplanned medical practices with the help of absolute identification and proper management by utilizing advanced and technology-based knowledge of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.

Vision

  1. To determine the elements of pollution caused by human behavior and industrialization and its effect on humans and living organisms and the whole ecosystem.
  2. Reduce the rate of pollution and develop appropriate remedial measures at hazard production sites
  3. And as a remedial measure-

(i) Utilization of recombinant microorganism and their product i.e. enzyme

(ii) Encouraging to use of organic and plant-based material in place of hazardous inorganic chemical

(iii) Implication of   modern medical treatment approaches and

(iv) Cooperative work with other school of Science (Physics & Chemistry) on global warming and radiation.

Fahmida Binta Wali
Lecturer and Head
Department of Environmental Biotechnology

Welcome to the Department of Environmental Biotechnology (DEB) at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE), established in 2024, CVASU research and farm-based campus, located in a charming place at the foot of the mountain of Hathazari, Chattogram.

Our aim is to produce the academic, researcher, and entrepreneurial leaders of tomorrow, together with the academic research processes and bio-scientific advances they will employ. Our strategy is to work at the interfaces between Biology and Technology. The mission of this Department is to excel in providing quality higher education and frontier research in the field of Genetics and Biotechnology keeping in view the challenge of the twenty-first century. One of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century is environmental pollution. Environment biotechnology uses living organisms (microorganisms/fungi) or their by-products e.g. enzymes and hormones for efficient industrial production. It also deals with environmental pollution, bioremediation, and biomonitoring processes, and the implementation of appropriate approaches for the restoration of our native ecosystem.

The department is now located on the 3rd floor of the Academic building 1. This department initiates to build of modern research laboratories for biotechnology-based research. The faculty members of DEB have been actively involved in research, especially environment, and human health-based research. The DEB family of current students, staff, and faculty members is highly motivated and aims to work together for the greater benefit of the nation and the world through their knowledge dedication, research, and combined efforts.

Thank you for visiting. For mutual understanding and cooperation as well as for sharing knowledge and research perspectives the door of the DEB family is always open for you.

Research theme:

''Biotechnology driven solutions for sustainable environment''

The main research focus of the Department of Environmental Biotechnology is to identify the polluted and eco-sensitive zones using Ecotoxicogenomics approach, Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS and to provide potential solution through novel microbes, receptor-based pesticides etc. The focus is also made on bioremediation, waste utilization, drinking water treatment and the environmental effect on human health. The faculty members of the Environmental Biotechnology Department have diverse research interests focused on assessing, monitoring and developing suitable methodologies to ensure sustainable development of the environment. They are working on three broad aspects including Impact of Environment on Human health, Environmental pollution, medical microbiology and immunology to attain the goal of Biotechnology driven solutions for sustainable environment.
