The Faculty of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) deals with modern science that has facilitated continuous development in the fields of Agriculture, Health, Industry, and Environment through recombination and/or genetic modification of microbes, plants, and animals. Department of Environmental Biotechnology is one of the five departments under this faculty. Environmental biotechnology is a field of technologies that uses biological processes, living systems, or organisms to produce goods and services for the greater interest of the environment. Removal of pollution, Renewable energy production, Biomass production, Genetic rescue, Site remediation, improvement of Soil health, reduction of Greenhouse gas emissions, and so on.
Environmental biotechnology uses different techniques and/or organisms i.e. microorganisms and secondary metabolites such as enzymes to protect, improve, or restore the environment. Environmental biotechnology is an area of active research and development with the potential to contribute to developing sustainable solutions to environmental problems.
Mission
The prevention of environmental pollution caused by industrialization, information & telecommunication technology, and unplanned medical practices with the help of absolute identification and proper management by utilizing advanced and technology-based knowledge of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
Vision
(i) Utilization of recombinant microorganism and their product i.e. enzyme
(ii) Encouraging to use of organic and plant-based material in place of hazardous inorganic chemical
(iii) Implication of modern medical treatment approaches and
(iv) Cooperative work with other school of Science (Physics & Chemistry) on global warming and radiation.

Research theme:
''Biotechnology driven solutions for sustainable environment''
The main research focus of the Department of Environmental Biotechnology is to identify the polluted and eco-sensitive zones using Ecotoxicogenomics approach, Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS and to provide potential solution through novel microbes, receptor-based pesticides etc. The focus is also made on bioremediation, waste utilization, drinking water treatment and the environmental effect on human health. The faculty members of the Environmental Biotechnology Department have diverse research interests focused on assessing, monitoring and developing suitable methodologies to ensure sustainable development of the environment. They are working on three broad aspects including Impact of Environment on Human health, Environmental pollution, medical microbiology and immunology to attain the goal of Biotechnology driven solutions for sustainable environment.
