The ocean, which covers 71.6% of our planet, is regarded as the earth's largest life support system due to its capacity for generating oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide, providing food, nutrients, regulating biogeochemical nature, climate and so on. Bangladesh being a maritime country, need to adopt the blue economical challenges as a top priority to promote its socioeconomic growth in a sustainable way. After settlement of maritime issues with neighboring coastal states, the country is now legitimately entitles to approximately 118,813 sq. km of sea region, including the territorial sea, contagious zone as well as Exclusive Economic Zone. In this northern Bay of Bengal, the scope of blue economic activities includes coastal and marine fisheries, oil and gas, minerals, tourism, shipping, renewable energy, ship recycling, human pressures and other related fields. A thrust in blue economic development may come through sustainable ocean governance. Maritime education is already underway since 1970s and different institutions involved in this unique knowledge generation process. The country would be greatly benefited from the regional and global cooperation for developing and ensuring blue economic aspect.

The Bay of Bengal, which shares diverse characteristics of the Indian Ocean, is a unique system due to shallow continental shelf region (<200 m), thickest sediment deposits, freshwater runoff, mixing properties, natural land reclamation process, hotspot for tropical cyclones, seasonal reversal of oceanic currents (southwest and northeast monsoon dominated), semidiurnal tides, rich biodiversity and abundance in fisheries resources. The oceanaire vision of Government of the Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh has already set up the context for inclusive socio-economic growth for the challenge of 21st century. Considering the significance of this coastal and oceanic resources,  the Faculty of Fisheries (FoF) under the Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) has started the marine science education since 2013 by establishing the Department of Marine Bioresource Science (DMBS) which taking the advantages of promoting coastal and ocean-based resource in the northern Bay of Bengal. This Department is the unique institution of its kind in this southeastern coast of Bangladesh that deals with marine biology, planktology, aquatic pollution and toxicology, marine fisheries management, GIS and remote sensing, and relevant educational activities, seminars, workshops and researches.  Recent maritime dispute settlement with neighboring states have opened a new sphere of blue economy in Bangladesh. In this trend, this department has a leading role to ensure proper exploration, exploitation of maritime resources in a sustainable way. 

Bangladesh yet need to be developed the maritime spatial planning strategy for this vast ocean space. The Government has already developed and prepared a background paper entitled as "Strategy for ocean and river resources management" for the Seventh Five Year Plan (2016-2020) for ensuring blue economic development. The contribution of ideas and knowledge in this sector greatly contribute this nation as well as to the human beings. I am extremely happy to see the sincere research initiative of the faculty members, researchers and do appreciate their continuous innovative efforts. I believe this will not only benefit the students but also other scholars of other institution of maritime sector.
